Word problems involving decimals

Remember to write the numbers in the correct place value before you add or subtract:

Show your working out clearly.


1. Larry has a wooden stick 120 cm long. He cuts out 74.5 cm from it for his project. What is the length of the wooden stick that is remaining?

2. Mr. Smith weighed 72 kg. He lost 4.5 kg during summer. How much does he weigh now?

3. Mr. Baker bought 37.25 kg of flour in June, 24.5 kg of flour in July and 43.75 kg of flour in August. How much flour did he buy in total?(all three months)

4. A barrel has 70 litres of oil. Mr. Cook uses 3.5 litres on the first day, 4.25 litres on the second day, 7.125 litres and 6.125 litres on the fourth day. How much oil is left over in the barrel after 4 days?

5. Mr. Chef buys 50 kg potatoes for his restaurant.  He uses 3.5 kg potatoes daily. How much potatoes will be left after 2 weeks?

6. John drives 46.5 km everyday to go to his office. How much distance does he drive in a week if he works from Monday to Friday?( Hint: Remember he has to come back home everyday?)

7. Jack bought a video game for £34.99. How much change will he get back if he pays with a £50 note?

8. Jessie buys a notebook for 4 pounds 25 pence, a pen for 2 pounds 16 pence, a pencil for 1 pound 5 pence and an eraser for 65 pence. How much change will she get if she pays with a £10 note?

9. Mr. Teacher has a wooden stick 1 m long. How many 12.5 cm pieces can he cut from the wooden stick?

10. Alice buys a burger for £4, chips for £1.25 and a drink for 99 p. How much money does she spend in total?




Simple, Complex and Compound sentences

Make sentences using the following starters:

Make sure your sentences have lots of detail, good vocabulary and more importantly make sense.

Keep in mind to use capital letters, commas, full stops and other punctuation where necessary.

After you write each sentence, identify whether it is Simple, Complex or Compound and write it down.

Last but not least, read through your sentences once you finish.

Capital letters, Commas and Full Stops

Capital letters:

- used in the beginning of the sentences. 

Example:  She went to watch a movie.

- name of a place and a person (proper noun), days of the week, months etc.

Example: Anna and Saly are planning to go to Paris next Friday.

- when somebody is beginning to speak.

Example: Maria said, "It is very hot today."


Full Stops:

- at the end of a sentence.

Commas: 

- to separate things in a list.

Example: Vince went to the shop to buy milk, bread, sugar and eggs.

- when a pause is needed for the sentence to make sense.

Punctuate:

3. Maria made a huge bouquet with 60 tulips. 10% of the tulips were yellow. How many yellow tulips were in the bouquet?

4. Year 6 had 76 pupils. 25% had blue eyes. How many pupils had blue eyes?

5. 560 cars are parked in a parking lot. 10% of the were BMWs. How many BMWs are there? 
    25% of them were Volkswagen. How many Volkswagen were there?

Two step word problems:

1. Kate gets £10 every week as pocket money. She saves 25% of it every week. How much does she save after 20 weeks?

2. There were 168 trees in a garden. 25% of them were apple trees. Rest were pear trees. How many pear trees were there?

3. A popular video game costs £34. It is on sale for 10% off. How much does it cost now?

4. There were 1120 apples in a sack. 10% were spoiled. How many unspoiled apples were there in the sack?

5. Mr. Baker bought a 5 kg of flour. He used 25% of the flour to make cakes and pies. How much flour would be left in the bag?
